Equine olfactotherapy

Published on 2019-08-13

The legislature has finally recognized that our horses have emotions and should therefore be treated with respect.

As horse lovers, we already knew this.

It's true that we are often confronted with the psychological problems of our beloved equines, and that unfortunately, we have little or no means of helping them.

Today, I'd like to give you an insight into the emotional side of horses.

I'm going to talk to you about emotions, essential oils and the sense of smell, in other words, olfactotherapy.

Etymologically speaking, the word emotion means é = outside and motion = movement. This means that emotion has to "come out" so as not to become a trauma. Emotions are essential to life, as they have a bio-regulatory function, participating in the body's overall balance, such as the creation of hormones.

There are 3 stages in emotion (which must be released) :

  • Emotional charge or stimulus: My God, a plastic bag on the path...
  • Tension: the body prepares to flee, i.e. goes into orthosympathetic mode: the horse tenses up.
  • Emotional discharge: a decision is made. he horse blows and passes by the plastic bag.

If there is no discharge, the body remains under tension and stress. Most horses therefore live under chronic stress, which greatly reduces their learning capacity and damages their health.

Smell is the only sense that accesses our unconscious directly, unlike the other 4 senses, which first have to mentalize what is perceived. In fact, the transmission circuit in the brain for odors is totally different from that for sounds, tastes, perceptions and sight.

Olfaction is the vehicle of emotional information. In the horse's case, its actions are the result of its emotional reactions. He's really in the moment.

Smell is truly a primordial sense for equids.

Now that we know which sense we need to work on, what tools do we have at our disposal? ESSENTIAL OILS!

Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plants by steam distillation or expression (citrus fruits).

Essential oils have 3 actions :

  • Biochemical, which we won't go into today
  • Energetic
  • Informational or subtle

Energetic action is linked to bioelectrical activity.

In other words, it's linked to the positive or negative charge of molecules.

Cations capture electrons and are therefore positive.

Anions donate electrons and are therefore negativizing.

Positive molecules are therefore tonic and stimulating, while negative ones are soothing and antispasmodic.

Energetic action is linked to the vibratory power of essential oils.

In the universe, everything is energy, everything vibrates, everything has a frequency. Every single component of nature has its own flow of electrical energy (vibrations). Each vibration can be quantified by a specific frequency.

The frequency of each living being is a barometer of its health. If we fall outside this optimal range, we run the risk of developing physiological illnesses or psycho-emotional problems.

Essential oils have very high, coherent frequencies.

Through the principle of entrainment (a substance with a higher frequency can increase a lower frequency), they bring the body back into tune. They will resonate in harmony with the body of the horse, human or dog.

What's more, essential oils don't resonate with negative emotions, which are easily eliminated.

EOs help to dislodge forgotten traumas by bringing them back into our consciousness, where we can deal with them and let them go.

Subtle or informational action involves another concept, Prana or Ki.

Prana is the breath that flows through and animates the whole body. It is invisible, but its most perceptible manifestation is breathing. Breathing essential oils influences the quality of the Prana inspired.

Essential oils, with their own energy and history, create a direct link with nature and the 4 elements (air, earth, fire, water), reconnecting us with our own energy and history.

Finally, to protect itself, the brain buries an unexpressed emotion in a "hard drive". EO acts as a balm to bring back from the unconscious to the conscious a trauma we've tried to bury. They explore the meanders of the "memory", accessing the root of the suffering, bringing it to light (bringing it back to the conscious) in order to generate healing.
